Drawings attributed to Hartman Bache based on his signed annotations on many originals, although an artist or draftsman under his command may have been responsible. Copy photographer unknown, but likely produced by or for the U.S. Light-House Board, the 12th Light House District, or the Army Topographical Engineers.
Original drawings appear to have been mounted with printed captions, with most annotated in ms. and signed by Hartman Bache, with most dated 1859. The photographic copies reproduce this marginal text. Hartman's signature follows the pattern: "Office of the 12th Light House District, San Francisco, Cal, [date] [signature], Maj., Topographical Eng. Brv. Maj."
Signatures of two other artists are present within two images: T.E. Sandgren and [James Madison] Alden.
